Well the Supreme Court has just ruled that the firefighers from New Haven were given a raw deal and overturned all the rulings from the lower courts. That should cheer you all up a bit.

Pretty ridiculous OP. As if the victim of a crime really "benefits" from hate crime laws. Having someone punished more or less doesn't benefit or harm the victim. And also it's pretty retarded to assume that it is now open season on certain groups because of the lack of hate crime legislation. Imagine a criminal sitting there going "all right it's only 10 years for this robbery rather than 20 because the guy is white, open season." The OP is about the worst argument against hate crime laws that I've ever seen. It really goes to show you how retarded people will go to try to make their argument sound more outrageous.

Doesn't matter, Lizzy. These laws are still written to exclude protecting white males, and even after white males are no longer a majority (which I don't think we are, we're a plurality IIRC), the laws don't change themselves, and Congress isn't going to change them.

Bert, while it's true that the punishment for a crime doesn't really help the victim, I'm concerned with the precedent that specific ethnic groups are less deserving of "protection" from the same laws. For example, say there's a couple of inner city gangs fighting. Why does a white kid who shot a black kid face more jail time than a black kid who shot a white kid? Or, hell, than a black kid who shot another black kid, or a 'Rican kid who shot a Mexican kid? Why does him being white make it "okay" to slap more jail time on top of the existing charges?

I swear, Dr. King would be ashamed of the things done in his name these days. Whatever happened to judging someone not by the colour of his skin but by the content of his character? And while we're on the subject, why isn't justice blind anymore?

I was just kind of kidding...but it is kind of rediculous for the bill to not include white males...we do still have hate crimes against white people...I know I went to an all black school, and ummm ya they are not to damn friendly and welcoming either when you are the minority....never held my feelings of dislike against the whole race....just certain individuals.....but laws like this to me are the problem with racial issues...I actually got this line from a gay republican about gay marriage...but it made a lot of sense...we should enforce the same laws for everyone, not just certain races/sexualities/gender. I think by making laws for certain people we are still in a way discriminating. It only makes us see more of the physical differences in people when we make it an issue.
